Chapter 8
While Cayden searched the dresser, Niall let Russ and a pair of technicians into the house. I sat at the dining room table, willing the aspirin to kill my dull headache and the coffee to kick my brain into gear.
Cay returned first, Ryanâs wallet carefully wrapped in a white sock. âTime to clean out the drawers, Cas. Hanging onto his underwear this long is a little creepy. And the daybed says twelve-year-old, not grown woman.â
âMind your own business.â
âAs long as you donât stick me with the daybed.â He shrugged and cleaned up the rest of my breakfast in a couple bites.
Niall frowned at that, but he didnât know all the dynamics. I never once had to sit at the table until my plate was clean, and I never ate more or less than I wanted.
While the assistants began unpacking tools, unrolling wires and laying out the components, Niall and Russ joined us at the table.
âJust so weâre clear,â Russ began, only to be interrupted by Cay.
âWhat kind of system is going in and how close is help when it trips?â
When Russ glanced at me, I nodded. âIn lieu of a husband, my brotherâs the one I want here listening in.â
He didnât comment other than to brush a finger over his bushy handlebar mustache. Sharp gray eyes assessed my brother, who gazed back. âOkay then.â Russ silently made a decision, flipped open the file for my account, and described the system in detail.
Cay asked a few questions, made a few suggestions that Russ liked, and before long they joined the technicians, leaving me free to deal with Niall. Or rather, left me free for him to deal with. Ducking into the bathroom afforded me a few minutes of privacy. I told myself I wasnât trying to impress any man as I brushed on a light coating of makeupâfoundation, muted earth-toned eye shadow, liner and mascara. I used a clip embedded with crystals to hold my hair in a tight bundle and swapped the gold studs for small jet dangles. From the bedroom I grabbed a loose-fitting black cotton camp shirt, and socks.
Niall stood by the door, rattling the keys on his ring and watching me move the load of clothes from the washer to the dryer and start a new batch. Frowning slightly when I laced up casual black sneakers, he handed me my purse, then escorted me out the front door and into his car parked on the street.
I had the presence of mind to look around. Was that a shadow moving behind the curtain sheers across the street and down one house? Had the house changed hands recently? With an uncomfortable jolt, I realized I didnât know much about the neighbors Iâd lived with for four years. In that moment, terror replaced the comfortable fog Iâd been living in. Some of the houses on the street were rentals, but which ones? If a moving van or trucks loaded with furniture had been around lately, I hadnât noticed.
With my heart pounding, I started noticing right then.
